I used to teach tonguing this way. I would give the student a straw
(drinking straw -- the band room being adjacent to the cafeteria made these
readily available). Then I would have them blow through it with the
instruction..just keep blowing. Then I would "articulate" a string of
rapid "notes" with my finger on the open end of the straw and tell the
student "now you do that with your tongue at your end of the straw". Never
had one who failed to grasp the concept and make the transfer to the
instrument. The only thing remaining might be some fine tuning of tongue
placement.
