I agree with Karl about the word "attack" being used. Instead I use the term
"tongue start." If you tell your student that you are going to teach him
how to do a tongue start, he might get the ides that each tone is started
with the tongue. Sometimes it helps to tell him to put his tongue on the
reed, "touch the reed with your tongue." alsoI have had success with telling
students that it is easy to do and tonguing 5 sixteenth notes then have them
imitate me. tell them to touch 5 times saying ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. Also tell the
student they are not to stop the air between the notes, but keep the air
going in one long puff. Tell them not to make separate puffs for each note
but to use one long stream of air. Make sure they understand that the tone
is produced by the air vibrating the reed and their goal is to stop the reed
from vibrating with their tongue. After they can do five tones, then have
them slow down the five tones, then playing them very slow keeping the air
going in one steady stream and not a separate puff for each note. I their
embouchure gets loose, they can tighten that up after you are sure they are
tonguing. Maybe some of this will help in conveying the concept to your
student. Good luck.
James
