The mental adjustments and tricks people use in reading clefs and
transpositions are fascinating.
I can read bass clef in piano or full score, but find it very difficult
when by itself, for a bass clef instrument. I tend to flip into alto or
treble clef.
Alto clef was not a problem, because i was learning a new instrument and
clef together, it was all new so not confusingly half familiar.
And i have a buddy who plays horn, who can read cello parts easily in
bass clef, and gets the right notes when the part goes into tenor clef--
except he has a hard time getting the half-steps in the right location.
Sometimes after transposing C parts, i have to chant "written notes" when
back to Bb part.
