Although I can't remember which book I saw this in, one book actually
prescribed playing the clarion notes without using the speaker key as a
drill. I believe the objective was to learn control of one's breath
support, embouchure, etc. If you can make those clarion notes sound good
without the speaker key then you should have no trouble making them sound
good with it.

Probably any really competent player can learn to do this deliberately.
More than likely, many intermediate players could learn it too.
