When watching major orchestras -- certainly the ones who suffer from the
"conductor du jour" syndrome -- I'm oftentimes struck at how little the
players actually bother to look at the conductor. OTOH, let's face it; Bugs
Bunny could successfully conduct the Chicago Symphony, depending on the
piece. If it's an old war-horse, they don't need a conductor. Probably
don't need sheet music.

A useful contrast would be the recording studio. There's not much room for
slop when the tape is running and everyone is sight reading. There are few
things in life as humorous as watching a viola player attempt to play along
with a click track. ;-P
