It's always harder to to tell intervals - even octaves --when using
a pure (electronic) tone; the overtone series of the notes are
what help us tell when intervals are good.

Arthur Benade once recounted the story of asking professional
musicians to identify and judge intervals which he generated
using pure sine waves. They did so dreadfully and were so
mortified by how badly they did that Benade had to sneak
a few overtones into the notes so they could salvage their
egos.
