The tuner to which you are referring is the Center Pitch. You clip it to a
music lyre and it picks up the vibrations from the instrument and is not
suposed to pick up other instruments. You can set it for the key of your
instrument (Bb,Eb, F, or C) and it has a setting choice of A=438, 440, or
442. It has a small screen the shows >>>Bb<<< in tune, >>>Bb<< a little
flat, or all the way to > Bb very very flat. I had one of my trombone
players use one and helped him with his positions. I tried one on my
clarinet and it worked fairly well, but I really didn't do much with it. It
responded to the notes and has a quick response. I did not try it in the
group setting, but the trombonist said when the band plays loudly, it does
not work as well. I think it picks up some of the sympathetic vibrations
from soem of the other instruments. I personally did not like for myself,
but I did not give it a big trial. It does not have a meter to tell you how
many cents sharp or flat you are, so maybe that is why I did not like it all
that much (IMHO). Your local music store can probably get one if you are
interested. They are made by Onboard Research Corporation. They are $49.95
list.
