Gil,

I've always promoted the use of a tuner that will emit a pitch to tune
against. A meter can give you an indication of where certain notes lie on
your instrument, but will not prepare your ears to adjust to a pitch as what
happens in a real tuning situation. I use the Korg AT-12 because it has an
analogue meter and it emits a pitch that can be calibrated. If you would
like to know more about how I use the tuner, see my article on intonation at:

I'm looking to purchase a good tuner to start examining my tone in
more detail, and I was wondering what people on the list were using
and why they thought it was a good purchase. There seem to be a
plethora of units available. I'm also curious if anyone has had any
experience with the new units that have no microphone but required
physical contact with the horn (I think via a lyre), as they measure
the vibration of the instrument itself.

Best Regards,
