Subj: [kl] Mozart K.622

Working 3 jobs has kept me from any lengthy reply to the interesting
comments I've noticed, but for the "record", an arrangement of the Mozart
clarinet concerto as a quintet apparently already exists. I heard an
acquaintance playing it a few weeks ago at a rehearsal of a chamber music &
choral group for a concert. I assumed he'd just taken parts from a full
orchestral arrangement but I learned from him tonight that he purchased it
as a quintet at some music store in Perth, Australia. I haven't seen it yet
but should next week and will pass along arranger and publisher for any
interested individuals. The same chap has the K.581 which I also intend to
examine, and will make my choice later on. The K.622 arrangement, by the
way was for only the Adagio movement - I believe.
As far as my own feelings go about the "arrangement" - I'd have to say that
the K.622 would certainly sound better with strings than piano - and if
performed with grace, beauty and dignity - then Mozart's creation would have
served it's purpose, at least far better than it's performance at numerous
solo contests every year by unskilled students/ amateurs. I've read
commentary here on occasion by some of you who play professionally, who do
not perform the K.622 due to your personal feelings about the piece, and I
understand and respect those comments. I'm not a professional - and for my
own reasons may or may not choose ultimately whether to play it or not - and
it won't be for reasons of competition if I do - but for an opportunity to
play on my own for an audience that expresses something meaningful for both
myself and my listeners. If I don't feel that I can do the piece as I
believe it ought to be, I won't use it.

John
