John in Alice Springs,
What deeply held feelings you (and I) have stirred up!
I have just looked through the score (B.&H.ed) of the concerto. It is quite,
quite remarkable. In fact the whole work <would> play thru` playing the
printed orchestral string parts as 4tet/5tet with one instrument on each
part, without anything else (i.e. fl.bsns, hns) hardly being missed. What it
would sound like is another matter. So, you <don`t> need me after all.
Elements of balance re forte/pianos and register would need some small
adjustments in 1st vln needing to play 8ve occasionally, only for a couple
of bars each time, to cover forte when flute enters in tutti. You might also
want to cue bsns/hns in where celli(o) are (is) resting. They might already
be cued. That is <all> you need do. Little more than 45 minutes adjustment
on each part. Purchase the parts (do not hire them). Finally, I`m sure I
speak for all when I suggest for you to also look at the real 5tet at
sometime in the future? Soon? There is one major point which none of us has
as yet picked up. The solo pt of the concerto is (as it should be) a
CONCERTO. Do it by all means with 5tet (preferably), but it will tax you
<much, much> more than playing the real quintet. Reason being that it
requires stamina, (of which the 5tet does not require quite so much) and
that stamina is supported and sustained by the design and weight of the full
body of strings and wind. That helps the soloist more than what is probably
realised. You will no doubt look (and feel) quite exhausted to your audience
come the applause.
Very Best Wishes
>From me, and dare I say it, all at klarinet?
Tony Wakefield.
