I'm looking to purchase a good tuner to start examining my tone in =
more detail, and I was wondering what people on the list were using =
and why they thought it was a good purchase. There seem to be a =
plethora of units available. I'm also curious if anyone has had any =
experience with the new units that have no microphone but required =
physical contact with the horn (I think via a lyre), as they measure =
the vibration of the instrument itself.

I chose the Seiko ST-1100 when I had a number to select from
in a large store, and I like it.
There are zillions of models, as you say, though I don't think they
differ in accuracy, just features - so pick those that you find useful.
If you get one with an external line input then you can get a separate
acoustic pickup that clips onto the bell (say). Mine is made by Matrix
and is not expensive. These are very good, especially when in
a noisy environment - I never use the direct microphone now.
