I have always oiled my instrument with the sweet almond oil mentioned by S.
Hammond. My instrument of choice is a Buffet RC purchased back in 1976.
Even after oiling the bore eventually will dry out somewhat with age and
repeated swabbings. My tech who works only on clarinets suggested sending it
to someone he knows who does a hot oil treatment. The instrument (minus keys
and posts) is immersed in a heated (I don't know how hot) oil for a week. He
said the ones that have come back have been great. They are like a new
instrument. The overall response is better and the bore is like new. I saw
one that was done and it looked and played like a new instrument. I will let
you know how mine plays when it comes back. Of course it will also be
repadded with cork on the top and strabinger pads on the bottom and any play
taken out of the keys so that alone will make a difference. I am looking
forward to getting it back the first week in July.
