Bill,
Are you moving your 1st digit correctly? Your tutor should advise you to
<not> lift it, but to <roll> it. It must <touch> the body of the instru. as
it rolls upwards to the A key. When there, keep it poised at the <bottom> of
the A key. <Don`t> let your 1st digit slide upwards anymore to the <top> of
the A key. <There> lies the secret of keeping 2nd & 3rd digits poised over
their own respective holes. Lift fingers off only a small distance anyway -
you know <that> one. So many <do`s> & <don`ts>!!!!!!!!! The mantra should,
and would work if you
persevere with the <physical> practise, (slowly & deliberately - you must
try to not get bored), not quite so much the <mental> repetition. Did you
know that I read
some advice once. An American prof. wrote that it is actually possible to
practise the clarinet whilst watching TV. Here`s how. Leave your mouthpiece
in another room, so you are not tempted to blow. Switch on the box, sit down
and sitting forward (not relaxing back) hold the instru. as you would for
playing, and start your tricky finger movement, with book open at first.
Slowly - don`t miss that huge tiger leaping onto it`s prey, begin this
sequence of events:-
Analyse,

Memorise, (close book)

Close eyes, (temporally, as you are watching the kill).

Practise. (Use the rhyming pronunciation)
Now memorise this sequence, and never, ever, forget it. You will find it to
be a life saver when small <pockets> of nasty finger movement occur in what
would normally be a quite manageable piece.
Tony, (the other one.)

My tag line - What`s great to be with, and sometimes great to be without,
when you are sitting in the woodwind section playing 2nd?

- - -Are you ready?

------are you really ready?

- - - - - - - - - -are you really, really ready?

YOUR PRINCIPAL!
