I've tried twice during the last three months to buy the simple
sort of stuff from them that you'd expect of a beginner, namely a Benade
ligature and a bass clarinet stand. After waiting 30 days for the
ligature, I called and they told me, "Its on backorder, and it will be
another 60 days." This is not the slightest bit of exaggeration. This
is exactly what they said. So I ordered it from International, who
shipped it the next day (I looked at the UPS sticker).
When I tried just this week to buy a stand for my newly-rented bass
clarinet, they told me, "We don't have it in stock right now, it's on
backord..." I didn't bother to listen to the rest. Perhaps he was
going to switch me to the high-priced spread, I don't know. But the
clerk's voice was so 'dead' that I felt like he was going to say "It's
on backorder" no matter what I asked for, and he knew that I knew that
he knew.... and he didn't give a sh__ anyway.

I was wondering exactly as you were whether I was overreacting to
an unusual pair of circumstances. But I did throw their catalog in the
trash can this week.
