David,
I consider myself a very competent teacher. I have been teaching how
to improvise for about 15 years now. And I do it on clarinet, sax, and
flute.
Jazz is not like classical in respect to teaching it. Even if you KNOW how
to improvise, it doesn't follow at all that you can teach someone else to.
Improvising is not a physical activity like embouchure and fingers. It is
a thought process. Just as most English-speakers couldn't teach a Chinese
person to speak fluent, creative English, so most Jazz players can't teach
HOW to play Jazz. They can DEMONSTRATE. This is fine if the student is a
remarkable musician with an instinctive and extremely secure grasp of
their instrument and their learning functions. However, this is a rarity
among students.
Do you know how advanced this person is? Can he actually improvise
or just play with a jazzy sound? My phone # is 410-483-1923 in Baltimore,
MD. I am less than an hour away from many parts of the DC metropolitan
area.
