Franklin,

We have three bass clarinet players in the Claremont Symphonic Winds
(http://www.its.caltech.edu/~dooley/csw.html) and between the three of us we
cover bass, contra alto, and contrabass parts. As you play more and more
music written (or arranged) specifically for symphonic band or wind ensemble,
I think you will discover that the best composers (and arrangers for that
matter) write some truly wonderful individual parts for BOTH contra alto and
contrabass -- sometimes doubling bass clarinet, sometimes tuba, sometimes
not. The works of Frank Ticheli are particulary challenging for both bass
and contrabass players, i.e. "Blue Shades." Ticheli also knows the
instrument well enough to call for notes below written low Eb for the
contrabass which means you gotta have a paperclip to play the ink. But ain't
the low clarinets fun!
