If I recall, the original writer of this was Tony Wakefield, who clarified
in a post on another thread that "college" as he used it is more comparable
to "high school" in American parlance. Tony, I hope I read your post right.

That been said, there do seem to be quite a few university bands here in the
states. However, I would think that due to need for large numbers, they
cannot rely solely on music majors to fill out their ranks, even if they
require them all to play for several semesters.
