Hi Sam,
It depends upon what kind of jazz-style impro. you like, and wish to pursue.
To be able to read music is obviously a great advantage, in fact obligatory
in some aspects of jazz, notably big bands, where a good deal of the music
is ensemble playing. If you confine yourself to smaller ensembles similar to
the Dixieland band, or even trio, quartet, then the sight reading aspect
becomes less important. What would be extremely valuable tho` for small band
impro. is to acquire a book of chords, in which is also explained the
fundamentals of chord progression, showing you some popular chord sequences
such as the 12 bar blues. The "Blue Moon" sequence. "Nice Work if you can
Get It" - the popular cycle of 5ths (Gershwin). Learn "Summertime" also.
there is a popular/regular repertoire of standard jazz tunes which most
jazzers use. Go to the clubs and listen. Buy C.D.`s and listen. Switch on
the radio and listen. If you`ve got a good ear, unlike me, and I play
cocktail piano in restaurants, then it won`t take you too long. Write down
in a note book your increasing list of titles, and the key you play them in.
Watch the keys tho`. they can be <set> quite specifically for some
"standards". "Misty" is usually always in Eb. F for clarinet.
Best of luck.
Tony W.
