which might need the addition of

3 * 8^1 + 1 * 8^0 = 2 * 10^1 + 5 * 10^0

which is also equal to

3 * 8 + 1 * 1 = 2 * 10 + 5 * 1

it's all about a base number that you use for you number system and the
digits indicate the multiple of the base to the power of the place minus one
... this really is a joke amongst programmers that have to deal with
different number systems quite a lot. the other frequent systems being the
binary and the hexadecimal system.
