I'm not sure I believe this.

Thirty or forty years ago, the baby boomers were just hitting college, well
past the point where college was a luxury reserved for the elite. I don't
think we were at the peak of college attendance yet, but I do not think it has
risen dramatically since then. Further, I suspect (without any hard data) that
the percentage of college students enrolling in band has probably dropped since
that time, what with the myriad other demands on student time.

I'd wager that the number of college bands today is not significantly different
from the number in 1970, and that the size of those bands has probably even
decreased.

Now, is there a web site where I can look up all this data?
