I am a "veteran teacher" of 28 years. I have made it my business to learn as
much as possible about tone production, breath support, fingerings, and
embouchure for all the wind instruments as well as the fundamentals of all
the percussion instruments. Things I have learned over the years is that I
cannot possibly play the instruments as well as a specialist on each one and
I have learned that I must know where to find out the things I do not know.
I have people I can call on to let me know some of the finer points about
trombone even though I know I can teach that instrument well. I try to learn
new things about the instruments each year. There are some veteran teachers
who have taught for 20 years and others who have taught one tear twenty
times. If I get to the point where I am not learning, I will need to step
aside. Teaching is not a job, it is a career. It is also a calling. I
cannot stand being around people who are in it just for a paycheck (albeit a
small one). Hopefully those who are just drawing a paycheck are not making
those of us who are in it for the right reasons look too bad. I am now off
my soapbox.
