I experienced the same phenomenon as Ed where the reed mold is concerned.
The reeds played so well, I used to intentionally blacken them. Then I
started getting questions about why I had black reeds and, of course, there
was the requisite "Yuck!" that followed. After a while I got tired of all
the questions and comments, so I began telling people that they were a new
brand of reed from Russia that my Ukrainian cousin was sending to me. I do
have cousins in Ukraine, so it wasn't an impossibility, but I don't know
whether people really believed me or not. Now I use the Legere reed, so
it's a moot point.
