As Roger Garrett clearly indicated, Pat Metheny's comments originally
appeared on the Metheny web site,
http://www.patmethenygroup.com

His response to the controversy now appears on the site as well:
http://www.patmethenygroup.com/af/index-qna.html

Quoting Metheny or attributing opinions to him is fair enough, since he made
his remarks in a publicly available forum, not in a private e-mail. However,
IMHO, it's better to provide links to the original, rather than to copy so
extensively without the author's permission. We see one of the unfortunate
results in someone's mistaken assumption that Roger Garrett wrote the article
or endorsed what it said, when in fact he credited it to Metheny, and even
gave the site address. It's an understandable mistake, however. My
experience is that when somebody posts something this long without
>brackets
on it, readers generally believe that the person who posted the piece wrote
it. I hope that "Roger Garrett said thus-and-such!" misinformation is not
already wafting its way through cyberspace as you read this. The other
unfortunate result is that, although it's okay to quote up to about 300 words
from a document as background research for a topic, copying more than 1900
words from Metheny's site violates his copyright.

As to his intentions, he says the following in his reaction to the
controversy (which has raged in a number of other forums besides this one --
in fact, we got to it rather late):

>my "explanation" was intended for the 100 or so people
>who contributed to and followed the thread in question
>on our web site....[snip] of course, i overlooked the
>possibility that someone would copy THAT response
>and post IT on what now seems to be a bunch of other
>sites and newsgroups around the web, where of course,
>rightly, many folks cannot understand what the big fuss is
>all about, because like the initial comment, the context was
>missing....[snip] one last thing -- it is a little alarming to me
>to see that my little rant on this topic seems to have generated
>such a relatively huge response.... [snip] i guess i wish that
>the actual playing and writing could generate the kind of
>discussion that what was essentially an off the cuff
>cultural/political blurb into cyberspace seemed to.>

(He writes without using capital letters, except for emphasis, so please
don't blame me.) Still trying to decide whether I want to mix into the Kenny
G controversy yet again....Nah. ;-)

when you transport something by ship it's called cargo?
