Subj: [kl] About Kenny G & my appologies
Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 10:34:25 -0400

The way that my newsletter is set up, it seems very difficult to
differentiate comments made by Pat Metheny and Mr. Garret. There are no
quotation marks nor formatting to indicate who said what in the lengthy
submission.
Please know that if the dialogue against which I strongly replied was NOT
that of Mr. Garret, I offer my sincerest apologies - as a teacher of 30
years experience I found the quotes highly abusive, and most certainly out
of place on this group. As a teacher who has tried to encourage students to
think for themselves, I despise those who use position or power to poison
minds of others, or to sway their opinions.
As a teacher the most one should attempt would be to offer a comparison
between performers, styles, etc and let the students decide for themselves -
and while a teacher is entitled to an opinion it should be expressed as YOUR
opinion, and not as fact or law.
I thought that the main purpose of this group was educational in nature, and
that students of all ages might gain insightful commentary from the
professional members of this community of clarinet players. Perhaps a form
of censorship ought to be introduced if abuse continues - I'm certain that
there are many other groups dedicated to jazz, saxophones, and musicians
where folks can vent their opinions and slam Kenny G, or anyone else to
their heart's content.

Sincerely,

John W. Sheridan
Music lover and educator
