That orchestra surprised my husband and me as far back as 1974-5, when we
lived in Atlanta for about a year. By coincidence, we arrived there fresh
(no, actually, spoiled...) from a year in Boston, where even as starving
students we could O.D. on all sorts of great music, such as E. Power Biggs
playing regular recitals, gratis, on the superb pipe organ in Harvard's
Busch-Reisinger Museum. We didn't know what to expect in Atlanta, since
neither of us knew a soul there --we'd never even visited there. We found a
big clan of dedicated amateur chamber musicians in a thriving classical music
community in addition to a fine jazz scene. One of the first things we did
when paychecks started coming in from Kevin's first "real job" was to buy
season tickets to the Atlanta Symphony, along with new friends who sat with
us. We thoroughly enjoyed that season and I do look out for the Telarc
recordings of the orchestra sounding even better today.
