I am confused about all of Tony W's references to college. Most of the
problems occur in the first few years of instruction which are long before
college in most cases. Most of the non-majors who choose to play in
college are certainly adequate for marching bands and probably a lot more.

As Audrey points out, many band directors are only proficient on one
instrument or family of instruments. However, in most school settings
there isn't much instruction on specific instruments after the first year
anyway. Some very few lucky schools are able to offer individual
instruction and perhaps a few more have sectionals with qualified
instructors (my son's high school does this, but he goes to a public
magnet school).

Of course, the most important thing is for as many students as possible to
receive private instruction. Our colleges are certainly producing many
fine clarinetists who aren't going to find any other musical work, so
there should be a large pool to draw from.
