I recently came across the most disgusting reed I have ever seen.. I was
going through the cases of school owned clarinets and I found one that hadn't
been touched in at least 8 years(or so my band director tells me) and when I
removed the mouthpiece cap the reed was still there. I think there would have
been mold, but instead it was completely dried out and had turned quiet a few
different colors.. disgusting!
Oh, and this isn't really related to this topic but when I was going
through that same bunch of old, beat up clarinets(I'm supposed to redo them
for next fall) I came across one that caught my attention and I wondered if
anyone had ever heard of it. The clarinet is a Gretsch Commander, it's wood
with silver plated keys, and the upper section has a copper tube running down
it, and for how beat up it's pads and corks are it plays kind of nicely. Of
course it will be much better once it gets everything fixed. My band director
and my father(who has played for about 20 or so years) had no clue on whether
it was good, bad or somewhere in between. So if anyone has ever heard of it
or has any information on it, then it would be very interesting to me. I'm
mostly trying to figure out if it's worth my time to redo it with the better
materials and try to make it into a clarinet for the concert/symphonic band
instead of the marching band which is where the others are being sent.
Thanks,
Lauren
