In response to your tag about teachers not "teaching" their students things
such as alternate fingerings and the like. I just finished my student
teaching and I was with a "veteran teacher". Well there were things that I
knew that she did not. I was supposed to be learning from her, yet I ended
up teaching her something new every other day. In answer to your question,
is this a common occurrence...YES! I went to college and I only knew 4-5
alternate fingerings and could not play about C3! My first lesson with my
private instructor was terrible...we laugh about it now..he says he wishes
he had recorded how awful I was then!
However, one reason you cited was marching band...I'm sure this is the case
in some schools but I believe that the biggest problem has nothing to do
with marching band. It is the inexperience and lack of ability of some
teachers. These are the people that never really payed attention in their
methods classes on instruments. I made a concsious effort to learn all
instruments to where I could play them with some sort of ability. I am by
no means a virtuoso tuba player....hehe but hey, I taught a 6th grader how
to play one last semester during student teaching!

Ok, I'm off my soapbox now...sorry.
