One of my all-time favorite recordings is an LP of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
with Alfred Wallenstein conducting, playing Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony (in the
abridged version, which I much prefer over the uncut version everyone performs
nowadays since CDs can handle 60+ minutes of music). I believe the performance
was from the late 50's. One of the many reasons I love this particular recording
is the clarinet solo in the slow movement -- the tone quality and phrasing are
just gorgeous. I assume this was Kalman Bloch playing?
