Nicholas -

To prevent mold, after each use of a reed, soak it in 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
(from any drug store mouthwash section) for about 5 minutes, rinse the
"crud" off with water, squeeze the water out of the reed with your thumb and
forefinger moving toward the tip of the reed. Place it on a flat surface
such as glass to dry as evenly as possible. NEVER leave a read on the
mouthpiece.

As a student 50+ years ago in Illinois, I wasn't nearly as meticulous about
reed care and I don't recall ever having mold on a reed. And now in "humid"
Florida, I still have never had any mold.

This H2O2 treatment is described more fully in several postings in the
Klarinet archives. I also carefully burnish both sides of the reed with the
back (convex side) of a spoon. This, too, is described in detail in several
Archived postings.

For those who may think that Hydrogen Peroxide could be dangerous, rest
assured that a 3% solution is harmless - as noted above - it is sold in the
mouthwash section of drug stores and can be used as a disinfectant on minor
injuries. A strong solution such as could be purchased from a chemical
manufacturer is toxic so you wouldn't use it as described above.

Let's don't start a thread on H2O2.

Hope this helps with the mold problem.

The mold just affects the reed life. It's not dangerous for us and the
doesn't taste funny. If you're getting mold on your reeds, it's probably an
environmental change. Change your storage so that your reeds have more of a
chance to dry out (eg- take the charcoal thingy out of the reed case if it's
a vandoren case, or if you keep them in a ziplock bag, take them out)
