I have the germ of an idea forming. I would appreciate whatever feedback you
more experienced members might offer.

I read every quarter in the ICA's Clarinet magazine about clarinet symposia
and conferences, and I am a bit jealous. I do not hear about these things
being held in my area (Portland, Oregon). Thus, I am actually considering
developing an "Oregon Clarinet Day".

Here is my concept. As a member of a community band, I am particularly
interested in adult amateurs. I would plan to invite adult amateurs from all
over the state; clarinet majors from the local universities and community
colleges; local high school stars (via the state band directors association);
perhaps the clarinet team from the Oregon Symphony; and some nationally-known
clarinettist to act as the "star of the show". David Schifrin comes to mind,
because of his long association with Oregon through Chamber Music Northwest.

I would hope to offer a master class, a lecture or two, a couple of concerts
by university clarinet choirs, some chamber music sightreading sessions for
all comers, perhaps a brief trade show by local vendors, perhaps an evening
concert by the featured performer, and an "instant lesson" session where
individuals of all calibers could get 60 seconds of advice from a master.
I'm planning just one day -- a Saturday, since we all have day jobs.

Is this kind of thing workable? Would a nationally known figure be
interested in participating in such a thing, especially if most of the
attendees (and the chairperson) were amateurs? How much should I expect to
pay such a figure? If I get Portland State to co-sponsor, I can probably get
the venue nearly for free, so I think the expenses would be fairly minimal.

What do you think? Am I nuts?
