I am a high school band director and I also teach begining woodwinds as well
as assist some with the junior high bands. If the coaches are making
disparaging remarks about the band, the band director should take this to the
principal. There could also be some parents who should call teh principal.
This is very unprofessional conduct on hte part of the coaches and they (or
that particular coach) should be taken to task for this. I have always had a
good relationship with the coaches at the school where I have taught except
for one coach. We ended up having a meeting in the superintend's office. My
concerns were echoed by a number of band parents who called administrators
about this. I think both athletic and music programs can flourish, but there
has to be mutual respect and one program must not step on another to recruit
kids. Time for the band director to muster his or her forces, find allies
(they listen more to parent concerns many times), and get the administration
involved. You know, when my 1st chair trumpet player plays a solo well on
the field, the second chair doesn't come up and pat him on the butt, coach.
And coach, if you are letting those guys do that in public, what are you
better check on those guys in the showers. (I didn't really say that to a
coach, did I? Only once) Good luck.
James
