This was sent to me from Neil Leupold, who is in the process of moving right
now. He isn't subscribed, but wanted to get this to the list:

Unless you're going to ask for a Schuller or Schoeck bass clar-
inet sonata, I imagine the best method for auditioning orchestral
bass players would be to pull out the major excerpts. Between
Till, Grand Canyon, Sorcerer, and the Mahler symphonies, along
with dozens of other solid tests of technique and musicianship
(say, a movement in bass clef and A from Nutcracker or something),
an orchestra committee could easily spend 20 minutes per player
getting an idea of who has the best bass clarinet chops and musi-
cality. Interestingly, I took an audition for Aspen many years
ago where they wanted to hear the slow movement from one of the
Spohr clarinet concerti on bass clarinet.

I do admit to liking your idea of a cello suite transcription,
and it wouldn't take much effort to create one.
