Not exactly true. The physical production (CD, jewel case, liner, etc.) costs under a dollar in high volume. The payments to artists, production crew, post-production, etc. adds a few more dollars. Marketing and promo adds a _lot_ more to pop/rock (those videos cost a lot to make!). Then the record company adds a really hefty profit margin on top.

Which is why there's companies like Naxos. Take orchestras that are good but cash poor, pay them less than the going rate in Europe, America, Japan, etc., don't promote heavily, and keep the prices down. There's a lot of those Naxos CDs that are really good, too! Some could benefit from more expensive production gear and more professional post-production - but then they'd have to pass those costs along.

The unfortunate side effect is fewer recordings of some of the more well-known orchestras since they now have to compete on price ...
