Shouryu makes some great points. As far as set up goes, if you are just
beginning, for reeds I believe that anything over a 2 or 2 and 1/2 is
counterproductive.

Now, for the most important aspect of playing. Breathing. In addition to
Shouryu's suggestion of the Arnold Jacob exercises, I would like to suggest
the Sandy Adam exercises. They are set up as progressing form easiest to
most difficult over a 30 day period. When I was in college, they did
wonders for me. Perhaps someone else on the list can fill us in on how to
order them now, if they are not out of print.

I am not familiar with your mouthpiece, but I would suggest trying as many
brands of reeds as you can at the same level of strength (2 and 1/2 to 3, as
I ascertain - truthfully I hope - that you are not a beginner) and see which
give you the best sound and feeling. I know for a fact that Zonda will send
you free samples. http://www.argendonax.com.ar. It is worth writing to
other companies to see if they send free samples as well. I suggest Queen
reeds and Oliveris also. Rico manufactures Rico (lower quality), Rico
Royals, Grand concerts and all the Mitchell Lurie brands. And of course
there are all the reed products available from Vandoren.

The best advice when trying to alter set-up is this: Keep it Simple and
don't stress. Enjoy your process.
