I wouldn't mention the word "baseball" in a room full of first-year
clarinetists. The instrument bears an unfortunate resemblance to one of
the major implements of the game, and that fact will NOT be lost on them! :-)

Great story coming:

I was teaching a group of 5th graders (3), and one of the members decided
to pretend that he had a bat as a clarinet. The kid came from a very
musical family (Principal Cello Pittsburgh sym, and Phila Orch members in
immediate family). He at the end of the lesson swung the clarinet a la bat,
and when he did, his well greased upper joint took off like a rocket across
the room, landing on the floor (non-carpeted) like a space shuttle coming
down for a landing - great arc. Fortunately it didn't crack his wooden
Yamaha YCL -34. When it happened the look on his face of sheer surprise was
classic - the other 2 (including him after it was ok) were on the floor
laughing (actually me too when I knew the Clarinet was ok).
Glad the lesson had concluded - it was all over at that point.
Happened 6 years ago - he will never live it down.
I like having long note contests. I had a 5th grader who on sax could go
for 65 seconds on one breath. I used to make him double the other kids long
note time in his group lesson to win the long note contest - and he usually
did too.
