Ian when I started on this piece I was overwhelmed with what themes to use.
I thought about using the more recognizable arias in the opera but I also
wanted to use themes that were beautiful and most of all simple of enough
for me to write variations on. Time was also an issue. I did not want to
pick so many themes that the work would become to long. It is a little more
than 12 min.
The piece that inspired me to arrange/compose this piece was the Luigi
Bassi's Fantasia di Concerto "Rigoletto". My teacher released a recording of
it last summer and I had a recording of Sabine Meyer and Robert Spring
performing it as well. So I thought it would be fun to compose a piece on an
opera inwhich I would write variations on themes or embellish themes. I
looked at different operas and ended up with The Barber of Seville. I will
tell you exactly what parts of the Opera I used. I used the Overture, the
theme from the introduction; Piano, pianissimo (First eight Measures), the
Canzone: " Se il mio nome saper voi bramate", which was the theme for a hard
variation. I used the Cavatina: "Una voce poco fa", which Rosina sings and I
think is very well known. So I know I did not use many themes from the
opera but the ones I used supplied enough material. I used Bassi's
'Rigoletto as a model, I don't think he used many either.
I will try to send you a midi but I am not sure if I can get it to
work.
