Classical music has been a loss leader for recording companies for a long
time; selling 2 or 3 thousand classical CDs or albums was generally
considered a success. The recording companies used to use their stable of
moneymakers to support the classical side. There were always a few
orchestras that made money, but not many. The Met had some disastrous years
where they spent significantly more on recording than was recouped in
sales - which ended up impacting the next year's schedule.

Now in a sense we're being asked to support our own - and I don't think any
of us want to pay the "real" price of what our music costs. Not many rock
groups need to take 80 musicians with them on tour, and those amps don't
need a retirement fund (even if the world would be better off if they _were_
retired :^)
