I sang it as a member of the Temple University Choirs with Ormandy and the
Philadelphia orchestra. We sat through the first three movements and stood
on the first note of the finale, which was done almost attacca. Apparently
Ormandy felt the visual effect added to the drama.

The hard part was not nodding off, especially during the third movement. The
stage was warm, we were sitting very close together on risers, and the only
thing that kept me from falling asleep was the thought that a couple of
thousand people in the audience would be staring directly at me as I fell
over.

As a college junior/clarinet major, though, it was one of the most
enlightening experiences I had ever had, hearing at such close range what a
first rate orchestra actually sounded like.
