Subj: [kl] Composition for Clarinet and Piano
Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 18:18:40 -0400

I have finished a composition for clarinet and piano that is based on
Rossini's Barber of Seville. It is called Fantasy on the Barber of Seville
for clarinet and piano. I was wondering has anyone heard of any
arrangements like this. I know Luigi Bassi did a lot of compositions based
on Verdi's operas. I have a recording of Sabine Meyer playing "Una voca poco
fa" but that is all. The piece opens with the introduction or overture.
Within in the introduction I have changed a lot of things to make the melody
in the clarinet virtuosic. I then move on to an aria and present the theme.
Then I wrote three variations on that theme. I have a bit of a cadenza
section, then I present another aria/theme and a huge variation follows. The
next section is a cadenza which brings back a previous theme which was not
embellished. After the cadenza is the variation. I move on to another aria
which is embellished. The next section is an aria that has 4 short
variations that progressively get harder. This leads into the biggest
cadenza. After that I go back to the finale of the overture which is
embellished and I end the piece. The work is 12 min. long. I have several
clarinetist interested in playing it. One being a member of the Washington
Airforce Band. Before I go to CCM I plan to orchestrate it for band. I
wanted to enter it into the Clarfest composition contest but I did not have
it edited and printed and did not have a clarinetist to record it. I find
the piece challenging. I would love for someone to look at it. I have finale
98 and if you have a system compatible to that it maybe possible for me to
share with it with you. You could email me privately at
clariguy@-----. It is
three mvts. and is about 5 min. long. It is entitled Three Miniatures for
Solo Clarinet. First two mvts are for A clarinet and the last is for Bb. My
clarinet professor premiered it on concert for me last fall.
