The liner notes for the David Shifrin CD, Delos D/CD 3020, state that "several
scholars have ... published careful, imaginative reconstructions of the original
clarinet parts for both the quintet and concerto." My guess is that
"reconstructions" doesn't refer to a complete edition of the work, though, if
that's what Dan was asking about. Mr. Shifrin based his performance on
alterations suggested by George Dazely, The Music Review vol. 9, p. 166ff
(1948), and that article only lists the spots in the quintet where he thought it
had been de-bassetized. Colin Lawson's book "Mozart: Clarinet Concerto" has a
couple of pages on K. 581 with references to three more articles with
suggestions for reconstruction. I haven't looked at those articles. I'm sure Dan
knows all this, but I thought others might be interested in reading up on the
background.
