Subject: Re: [donax-m] Tounging

Dear Rachel,

Here is the exercise I use with my students (and myself) to improve
tonguing/articulation...

Play a clarion g holding it out for four beats with good support.
(Metronome should be set at quarter note equals 60).
Have the student then attempt to interrupt the sound with the tongue, with
the very tip of the tongue placed on the very tip of the reed, and removed
VERY quickly. It is imperative that the student interrupt the sound, rather
than try to create the sound with the tongue.
Make the interruptions four times vis two, once the student has the hang of
it.
Quarter note speed may be increased, FWIW, gradually until you get to where
you want to go, velocity-wise. I would suggest simply practicing this
between 60 - 72 for a long time, and not getting any faster until the
student feels comfortable doing this.
The idea is that one gains more control doing it slowly than trying to
always go so fast. This slow stuff drives students nuts, but it is the very
best for making them aware of the physical process of playing.
