I <live> in Middlesex, Tho` it`s really <Surrey> - (the post man can`t cope
with the fact that the county of Midd/x met a fearful deletion during the
county boundaries adjustments). And I originally come from the "e-by-gum"
territory of Lancashire - (<part> of which was picked up and moved into
Cheshire, notably, the town of Warrington, during the same era of "Postman`s
Panic"). Some counties are re-emerging aren`t they? - Rutland - beautiful
Ruddles County Beer, sadly brewed elsewhere now. Everything bloody changes
doesn`t it? What I`d like to change is the toffs who look after the M.U. -
The <very words> they look after the M.U. i.e. "themselves". I have now left
due to their inability to educate the new young breed of music producers and
companies, who are increasingly looking to reduce musicians incomes. One U.K
national newspaper criticised the T.V.Session musicians for picking up
350/400 notes per 5 hour session, when the camera crew were not far behind
them. Not a word from the M.U., but I wrote to the paper in question
explaining that the musician`s training is fully 8 to 10 years before they
would be allowed to sit next to yesterday`s players like Kenny Baker (rest
in peace). The cost of instruments is also born by the musicians themselves,
sometimes exceeding 10,000 notes, (pounds Stirling for our American friends)
for example keyboards with all the software add-ons. WHEREAS, how long do
T.V. camera crew train for? 2 years? Probably not that long, and do they
have to buy and supply their own cameras. Not on your life!!!!!!!!!! I did
not receive any reply! I tried to explain to the Union that it should take a
far greater interest in the provincial self employed. If <they> all went
under, how many symphony orchestras would they then require to keep the
union afloat? I suspect a few more than what the U.K. are prepared to listen
to, in this current climate of "bashing the Arts". After voicing my
substantial disappointments to the Union General Secretary personally, (I
considered that he should hear directly from the "shop floor") he, believe
it or not, reprimanded me for not voicing my remarks to the local branch
meeting <on> the shop floor. WHAT <IS> DEMOCRACY?
Do I have a "chip" on my shoulder? I probably do by now. I`ve seen a lot of
producers scarper back to the U.S. with <my> money, in my time - Sorry
America, you have probably also been cat-weaselled by some English producers
too. It ain`t funny is it?! It`s about time that <all> music unions
introduced a series of informative leaflets/manuals, explaining all about
what producers requirements would be, when each time they promote live
music - players and music writers, which producers would be required to
read and understand, <after> they had applied to the appropriate union for
a license - YES, a license. A sort of franchise if you like.
Like all things nice tho`, some musicians are prepared to play for peanuts.
Are we our own worst enemy?
Anyway Ian, that`s me. A bit of a general broadside what? None of it
directed at you. You`re not the oboist are you? you <can`t> be, oboist`s
don`t visit Klar.sneezy do they? You <must> be a clarinettist. The only time
I spent in Scotland was on the Princess Street bandstand way back in the
`60s. I can`t even remember who or what the band was.
I`m sorry to make such a long reply to your simple query, I guess I just got
carried away. I do more writing (music) these days than performing. It
enables me to sit on my bum/ass more, rather than getting snarled up in
traffic.I use "Sibelius" software on the P.C.
Take care,
Regards,
Tony W.
