Ed,

In my phone conversation with you about the Patricola clarinets I completely
forgot about this problem. When I got the clarinets, I repadded them in
cork. (I did this because the Baltimore area is a moist, humid place and it
cuts down on damaged pads, IMHO. I play in dark, damp pits that seem to
create a lot of water. My back-up set of R-13's was padded in cork 30 years
ago and still has the same pads on it that were placed there then.)

When the original pads were removed, I was surprised at the small amount of
glue (one tiny drop about 1/4 in. in dia.) used to attach the pads. Of
course, it never impacted me because I switched pads almost immediately
after delivery. The only horn that doesn't have cork is my C clarinet and
that is because I needed it as soon as it arrived. So far I have not
experienced any problems and I have used the horn on almost a daily basis.

I have about 3 weeks now where I won't be playing it, so it will be
undergoing a cork repad as soon as I can get to it. My Patricola clarinets
were built with first-rate craftsmanship, so I fail to understand why the
amount of glue was so short-changed. I did notify Patricola Brothers of my
findings via e-mail, but have not had any response from them. If I don't
hear from them by the time I arrive at ClarinetFest, I will query them then
and inform the list of their response. Otherwise, as I told you on the
phone, I am most impressed with my instuments.

I don't know if this will help in your study of clarinets, but in view of
the above observation, I thought I should let you know.

Best wishes,

Nancy
