Subj: [kl] buying cheap
Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 15:24:48 -0400

Yesterday I decided to buy myself a CD. It's a rare occasion because I
hardly ever listen to recordings and when I do my LPs are in the next
room. This means that I have to leave my computer instead of using the
CD play feature I have on line.

Anyway, I felt rich though I like to buy cheap, and so I wandered into
the record shop, getting crushed by a lot of people until I got to the
Classic record area where almost no one ever goes. And wandering over
to records with composers who have last names beginning with "S," I went
through all the recordings of Schubert looking for an inexpensive one of
the Octet for strings and winds. It has been so very long since I
played the variations movement that I wanted to listen to it again,
particularly variation 3 where the violin does wonderful things,
wandering in and out of the horn and clarinet solo. It's a breathtaking
moment.

Anyway, there is a purpose to all this woolgathering. I finally found a
recording for $6.25 announced as "Willy Boskovsky and the Vienna
Octet." The Schubert Octet for $6.25!! It is Aura 189-2 ADD. Took it
home and played it several times. Wonderful recording.

Then I asked myself, "Who is the marvellous clarinet player in what is
obviously a live performance?" But for $6.25 they don't tell you who
plays anything (except for Willy Boskovsky, that is).

And that is one of the problems in buying cheap. You get the music
allright, but I suppose that the record manufacturers feel that, at
$6.25, you must be so stupid that you would not want to know who is
playing the clarinet (or horn, or bassoon, or anything). If you were
smart, you'd be spending more money and for that they'll tell you who is
playing.

Someday I'll learn.
