When confronted with that type of passage, what works for me is to not
attempt to play them short at all, and to keep the tongue light. I know
that many people feel that tonguing short will help you to go faster,
but when you're maxing out on your tongue speed, you can get another
notch or two on the metronome but lengthening the notes. (At least it
works for me.)
