Lelia, it's true that ClarinetFest would be the ideal opportunity
to do an experiment of some sort.
With my 'new' understanding of tone <heh!>, perhaps the following
would be informative:

Inform the audience that, for the purpose of this experiment, the
meaning of 'dark' is restricted to a tone with fewer high harmonics.
The test tones will be single unaccompanied long tones of uniform pitch
and constant volume in an otherwise quiet room. (in other words, no
music!)
We would ask several players with proven skills -- there will be
plenty of them at ClarinetFest -- to play several samples, each tone
with a different overtone structure according to the player's own
definition, but as constant as possible in all other respects.
If the University of Oklahoma could provide an electronic gizmo to
display the actual waveforms, the experiment would be even more
interesting.
