I played a King Super 20 Alto for years. It was the same type that Cannonball
Adderly played in the mid-late 1960's (not silver, but gold laguer with
imitation mother of pearl inlaid palm and trill keys and special "tone booster"
metal resonators on the pads. As a clarinet doubler, I always found it to be a
nice playing horn, but I had to search out lots of mouthpieces so I could blend
in sections where most of the players had selmer instruments. I agree, it was a
good horn for jazz, particularly lead playing, but not well suited for concert
or "legit" style. When I started teaching at the college level I found it
difficult to use this horn as most of my students played Selmer Mark 7 or Selmer
Super 80 instruments. My tone was just not what was considered to be the
current standard in legit style, so I traded my King for a Selmer Mark 7 (which
I love!). I also agree, be careful on the age and condition of the instrument.
Mine was made in the late 1950's. I saw the King super 20 "Silversonic" (silver
bell and neck) as early ias 1972 when I first entered college. A couple of guys
played them in jazz band.
