Reeds can play a major factor in reaching the high notes. But with most
of my students I find that it is usually caused by a failure to support the
Air Stream properly. I have come to the conclusion that poor support
creates
a multitude of other problems. It affects intonation, tension in the
fingers, tonguing, and the
embouchure (not necessarily in that order). One clue is in the embouchure.
I have found that I can play up to Altissimo C
on a soft reed if I am supporting the sound. I begin to notice that the Air
Support is not sufficient
when I am having to make major changes in my embouchure and the notes begin
to sound pinched,
even on a good reed.

I am taking the practice of long tones much more seriously so that I can
concentrate on supporting the sound.
Because long tones can be extremely boring, I use excerpts and etudes that
are very slow and having few moving parts.
The Adante portion of the Copland Concerto, and the 1st Etudes from Paul
JeanJean's 18 Etudes for the Clarinet, are a couple
of examples of these.

Hope this helps.
