Spohr wrote many works for his favorite clarinestist, Hermstedt.

The composer Weber, who knew both Hermstedt and Baermann, says about a
concert of Hermstedt:
"Hermstedt played twice very beautifully. A thick, almost stuffy tone.
Surmounts tremendous difficulties, sometimes completely against the
nature of the instrument, and not always well. Has a pleasing delivery.

I wonder if Weber would have categorized his tone as dark or bright?
